Swiss mountain brother hike

Our parents had the most genius idea ever! Going on vacation a week before Christmas. Escaping the Christmas shopping stress. My older brother and I wanted to go on a hike. While I needed to prepare for a military march in January we decided to choose a more difficult trail and sleep in a CAS (Club Alpin Suisse, they are open all year and very cheap!) hut up in the mountains. Our goal was to reach Capanna Campo Tencia, near Faido before sunset…

We ended up hiking 31 km, 12 hours, and going up 2000 m.

Map, sleeping bag, gloves, snow gaiters, camera, tripod, shoes, hat, food, … my backpack:

Our journey started in Ambri, about 15km away from the Italian borders. As you can see it was going up really steep already in the beginning. Here 600 m:

Later on we also had more difficult parts like this “wall” here. We almost had to climb. Luckily we “only” had to go to the right and not move up too much (see at the picture).

We walked by a beautiful, frozen lake (Lago Tremorgio, 1770 m a.s.l.). It made funny noises just by itself (from breaking ice layers) and was even more amusing when we threw some big rocks on the surface. (It sounded like the groaning of a whale) 😀

Having a small break at 2138 m above sea level at Passo Venett:

Frozen lake with snow on it, Laghetto Campolungo, 2260 m a.s.l. In the picture below we were standing in the middle of the lake:

Suddenly at around five o’clock the sun was going down, very beautiful but I thought very dangerous. It gets dark really fast we soon we needed to put our head lights on. We were about 2 hours behind our schedule and knew that we were still far away from the hut. Until now were hiking in a more calm pace and then started to walk with a more determined speed, afraid of loosing orientation.

This picture was taken before reaching a side hill of Pizzo Lei di Cima (at 2480 m a.s.l.). It was getting dark.

As long as the moon was in our sight, we were able to see where it was going, but soon it was covered by a thick layer of clouds. In the midst of darkness and weary leg muscles we lost our path. We had lost track of the trail signals, painted on the stones. Instead of moving slowly and try to find back to the path we almost ran down to where we thought it was the right direction. We ended up having to  to walk 2 hours back up the mountain and look for the signals again!!img_4950

At 21:02, about three hours behind schedule we found the hut. We had water, a fire place, a kitchen to prepare our food and comfortable matresses to sleep on. We made it!!

Hiking down the next day we saw the hut from the opposite site where we have come from the night before:

Ice in the ground. Never seen that before and looked so gorgeous!

Below snow line again. It was getting warmer but still cold enough to freeze a little stream that was going down the path here.

It was a marvelous experience hiking up in the mountains like that. My first experience so far in a setting like this. We are looking forward to more stuff like that!

The beauty of the Gospel

Dear family and friends <3 Wow this week was insane! It was super hot the whole time, the peak was 39 degrees! 😛 But ist was so awesome! It was just sweet to go out there anyway and to bring the people the wonderful message we have! We have an investigator whos name is Oleg. That was actually really cool how we got to know us. We just finished a lesson and we talked some other people that were there. Suddenly he walks up to us and akses if we can help him to overcome his addiction to computer games. He explained that he thinks that the Bible and God will help him. We were really excited. Talking to him about the Gospel that Heavenly Father gives us makes him really excited to pray and read the scriptures. One really interesting that I noted while teaching is that you often realize now things that you have never thought of before, but actually have a bigger meaning and beauty. For example lessons, when we teach the big apostasy before have always sounded me so sad and tragic, well yeah, beacause Christs church was completly distroyed... but in this other lesson I had this one simple thought: God was still comunicating to people through prayer. That was really powerful. God has not forgotten His children on this earth, He never had, does and will. He is Our Father. That message made the whole lesson really beautiful and meaningful. Then when the human family was ready God ordained a new prophet, Joseph Smith. That was probably the coolest day in Heaven ever! Can you imagine???!! So long their was no prophet on earth, no church, no leadership inspired by God! Those thoughts make me more to appriaciate the things that we have because of this. We have the fullness of the Gospel. We have more scriptures. We have another Witness of Christ. We have the Pristhood. Heavenly Father gave us that Gospel that we can be happy. That is the final goal. That we are happy here and their. With our families. Forever. This is awesome! P1030065_crop

Let the Lord strengthen you

Dear Family and Friends,
Life here in the mission field is amazing! We enjoy every day, no matter how hard it sometimes seems to be to forget yourself. This week we learned a great lesson about having a balance and taking more care for yourself.

There is a great scripture in the Book of Mormon that explains a little bit, what I mean:

Mosiah 4:27

“And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength. And again, it is expedient that he should be diligent, that thereby he might win the prize; therefore, all things must be done in order.”

The Savior expects from us to love others, to serve others, to forgive others and to lay everything on the altar (don’t do something for your own gain). Those two years I serve here in Ukraine are for the Lord and Our Heavenly Father. Sometimes I have the tendency of worrying to much about other peoples problem and how to serve them. It is important that we trust the Lord. Of course, we should do everything in our hand and always strive to do the best we can, but we should not go over limits of our own strengths. When we live a righteous life, the Lord will make the difference. He will strengthen us. The problems, afflictions might not become less, but you will become stronger. This is a wonderful promise from a prophet in the Book of Mormon:

Mosiah 24:14, 15

14 And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.

15 And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.

Often we intend to pray that the Lord will take our burdens away. But how then would we learn, get stronger and learn from our experiences? This verse shows us, that He makes us strong, that we can overcome our afflictions by ourself. My dear friends! How great is our joy, when we trust in the Lord, the source of the most powerful love, light and energy. I want to add my assurance that I know that He really does visit us in our afflictions in the most wonderful ways, when you think it is dark and no one there to rescue you. I know that He lives and that He truly heals our hearts, when we turn to him (3 Nephi 9:13).
Have an awesome week!
